Why were people hunter gatherers during the ice age?

What else could they be? The climate prevented any serious crop growing or animal husbandry. To eat and to survive they had to take advantage of nature's bounty in the form of edible berries, roots, seeds, nuts etc and supplement this with whatever animals they could kill or fish they could catch. There was simply no choice.
