Would civilization / mankind last longer without technological advances?

If we never developed ways to travel (cars, planes, etc), we would not be using mass amounts of oil. We would be eating locally. Unfortunately less people would survive since local areas would be more prone to droughts, disease and famine, but we would have the ability to move over a larger range if a local problem occurred. If there were less of us, there would probably be more animals. There would be a larger number of wild roaming bison and deer; we would be able to hunt. If today's civilization collapsed, what would we eat? There are far less wild animals then before mass development (linked to technological advancements), and there are so many of us. I feel as though, without technological advances, we would be smaller, more compact, and there would be more food / water available for everyone. If today's civilization collapsed, even with all of our technology, wouldn't we have a harder tie then our hunter / gatherer roots?
