Hello Kitty? I do not understand?

why are we saying hi to someone named kitty? Is it a foreign cultures way of saying hi? Is it slang for vagina? I am very confused........... My daughter asked for a hello kitty. WTF am i supposed to do, go find someone called kitty and let her say hello. Back in my day asians would stay in their side of the world and keep their traditions to them selves.!
